I have an idea for a new product but I don’t know how to manufacture or launch it.

Let’s assume the product is a new type of trash can. How do I go from the plain paper drawing and cardboard model I have now to actually getting this thing on a store shelf?

My problem is that I don’t know who to contact, who will manufacture this product, how do I find someone to build it, etc. More importantly, I do not know how to prevent others from copying my idea once they see what I have.

First, manufacture it. This can be expensive, but it is well worth it. Companies want to actually SEE the product and how it works, not just free-hand/CAD drawings. If your product is made of metal, contact a metal fabrication center etc. Next, promote your idea. Call up some companies that may be interested in them. If you designed a new trash can, contact a home goods store. A new electronic device? contact sony. Even if the companies aren’t interested, at least youre getting your name out there.
